John Terry's Scandal

By now, I believe the football world will have heard of the affair Chelsea's captain John Terry had with the ex-girlfriend of Wayne Bridge, his ex-teammate. These allegations shook English football so much that England's national team was affected prior to their upcoming World Cup finals in June.

Bridge decided to give up his place in the English squad, disregarding his friendship he once shared with Terry when they were once playing together in Chelsea, if not England. (Of course, Terry refused to apologize on national TV.)

Bridge isn't the only victim; Terry does face his share of consequences too. His captaincy (for England) has been stripped, his focus and confidence on the pitch greatly shaken, not forgetting that his family is now broken. Now, the public opinion of him has shifted. Some still adore him, while some view him with shame.

It took only one person's misdoing to destroy everything people had worked so hard to build and achieve. What happened to the man who was once named "Dad of the year"? No one could have known that things would turn out this way. No one could have imagined that of all times, this had to happen prior to the World Cup.

Leaders are supposed to lead by example. This does not apply only to individuals who are given roles in an organization or team, but also to those who are mentors, role models, or people whom others look up to.

We are to be the salt of the world, having been given a mission to lead others to Christ. We too have a responsibility to be good role models for others to follow.

Terry was once a role model many young center-halves aspired to follow. What about us?

"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

We need to ask God to help us, don't we?
